Wall Street's outlook on Fed rate cuts is setting the stage for a "lose-lose situation," says Deutsche Bank macroeconomic strategist Henry Allen. Indeed, the last four times we've seen rate cuts that fast, it's been because of the most recent four U.S. recessions," he wrote. To be sure, rapid rate cuts without a preceding recession isn't an impossible scenario, but that doesn't mean it's likely either, Allen noted. Paul Volcker's chairmanship of the Fed in the 1980s, for example, saw steep rate cuts, although that followed a period of extremely restrictive monetary policy. "[It's] hard to see how both rate markets and risk markets can both continue to thrive as they have recently," Stanley said.

How Ana Botín can defeat the Santander sceptics

LONDON, Dec 21 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Investors aren’t buying what Ana Botín is selling. That’s striking because analysts expect Santander to earn a respectable 11% return on tangible equity (ROTE) over the next 12 months. One way to express the dissonance between those numbers is to infer the return investors require to hold the bank’s shares. To shed that discount, Botín must prove Santander is the best owner of its component bits. The group generated an annualised return on tangible equity of almost 14% in the first nine months of 2022.
From Nov. 15 this year, the bank will join other UK retail banks in limiting customer transfers to cryptocurrency exchanges. Santander customers will face limits of 1,000 pounds ($1,123) per transaction and 3,000 pounds in total in any rolling 30-day period, for transfers to crypto exchanges via mobile and online banking. Customers will still be able to receive payouts from crypto exchanges into their accounts. Santander has seen a "large increase" in UK customers becoming victims of cryptocurrency fraud in recent months, a notice on its website said. Faster Payments is the infrastructure which facilitates real-time bank transfers for most UK bank accounts.
Faced with rising energy bills and double-digit inflation in the UK, every little bit can help, which is why I was drawn to the idea of switching bank accounts. By the time I realized this in mid-September, Santander had withdrawn its switching bonus offer. The bank also offered to credit my Santander account with a £50 payment by way of apology. By then, NatWest was already in the process of switching my First Direct account over, so I couldn't switch it to Santander. And you need savings, as some of the banks I used required £1,000 or more in the new accounts to get the switching bonus.

LONDON, Oct 26 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Europe’s big banks are enjoying a perfect moment. That dream scenario allowed Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE), Barclays (BARC.L) and Banco Santander (SAN.MC) to report chunky profits in third-quarter results released on Wednesday. Barclays’ revenue from trading fixed-income securities, currencies, and commodities in the first nine months of 2022 was 63% higher year-on-year. Deutsche, Barclays and Santander have slashed their group-wide stock of loan-loss provisions since 2020, and in the latter two cases they’re even below pre-pandemic levels. Deutsche Bank and Barclays were down 0.5% and 0.9% respectively.
